Join your race instead of creating it

Updated

A race is one event on Windline that everyone joins, so on race day you’re in the field on one live map. Add a race opens on “Is it one of these?”: find yours, tap it, answer one question, and you’re in. Can’t find it? Add it. Start recording on a race’s route and you go live on it by itself, as your Live on race routes setting says.

Why join instead of creating

A race exists once on Windline. When everyone riding it joins the same race, race day shows the whole field on one live map: where you are against everyone else, and your family follows you there. A copy of your own would show you alone.

Join your race

  1. In Rides, tap New, then Race or event. You see Is it one of these?: the races coming up first, and Search for a race (type its name or its town).
  2. Tap your race, or Join.
  3. Answer one question, Be found by everyone in live tracking?
    • Yes: anyone can find you by your name, and you’re on the race map for everyone.
    • No: only people with your follow link, and followers you approve, see you.
  4. Tap Save. “You’re in .” Share sends your livedot link if you said Yes, otherwise your follow link, and Share picture makes an “I’m in” picture for WhatsApp and socials.

The race is the organiser’s: its stages, its date, its start times and its course. Yours is your entry: your goal time, your words and who can see you, which you can add or change later on the race’s card in Rides (it has an In tag). Going live on race day is the same as on any race: see going live on a race.

Can’t find it? Add it

Tap Can’t find it? Add it and set the race up as before: name, dates, then its GPX. Once you publish it as public, it’s in the catalog and the next rider finds it instead of making their own. A private race stays yours alone.

When you create a race, add a GPX to one, change a draft to Race, or bring a route in from a link or Strava, Windline checks first. If it’s a race that’s on Windline already, you see Is it one of these? with the matches. Tap one to join it, or No, it’s a different race to carry on as you were.

Email a route

Email a GPX to routes@windline.tech as always. If it’s the route of a race on Windline, the reply and the notification say “Looks like . Join it?” with a Join button. Your emailed ride is kept too, so nothing is lost. See email a route.

A race of yours that’s also shared

If a race you made matches a shared race more people are on, its page shows “1,240 people are on the shared .“

  • Move to it: your goal, words and followers come with you, your follow link and livedot link keep working, and your own copy is removed.
  • Keep mine: the banner goes away for that race.

Nothing moves unless you tap it. If other riders have joined your race, it can’t be deleted or unpublished, but you can still edit it.

Live on race routes

Press Start on your Garmin, or start Ride live, on a race’s route near its start (from an hour before the gun), and you go live on that race by itself, even if you never joined it. Your phone says “You’re live on . Findable by everyone.” or “Only people with your link see you.”

  • Live on race routes (Account, Race day) decides who sees you: on (the default), findable by everyone, in the field on the race map; off, you’re still on the race, seen only by people with your link.
  • A race you joined in the app keeps the answer you gave there.
  • Turn tracking off on that notification takes you off the race map, and nobody sees you live. Your ride keeps recording, for Past and the challenges.
  • The race never shows your first kilometre, or anything within 1 km of where you started. Rides, tours and club rides work as before.

Big races on livedot

The big races have a page on livedot (like livedot.me/cape-town-cycle-tour) before anyone has set them up on Windline. I’m in there counts you in: when the race is set up and published, you’re in it, with the answer you gave. Its course shows “Course added by a rider · being checked” until we’ve checked it.
