How do I find and follow a rider by name?
Updated
In the Android app, tap Live at the top of the Events screen and type at least 3 letters of their name under Find a rider. On the web, use windline.tech/follow. Only riders who chose Findable by anyone show up. Tap Follow to see them on the map, with alerts when they start, reach halfway and finish.
Search
- In the Android app: tap the Live button (the radio waves) at the top of the Events screen. Under Find a rider, type their name.
- On the web: open windline.tech/follow on any phone or computer.
- On a race’s live map: the Find a rider by name box finds riders in that race.
Type at least 3 letters from the start of any word in their name: “mok” finds Thandi Mokoena. Up to 20 riders show, each with their photo, their race, and Live now, Finished or when they start.
Nobody found?
“Nobody by that name is findable right now.” Only riders who switched on Findable by anyone for their race show up, and many don’t. Check the spelling, or ask them for their link (windline.tech/f/…): it works either way.
Follow
Tap Follow. There’s no account to make and no request to send. They go under Following on the Live screen, live riders first. On the web, the riders you follow are kept in that browser.
Tap a rider to open them on the map, with the wind and weather where they are.
To see how it looks first, tap See the demo on the Live screen: a demo rider, always mid-race on the Coast Classic.
Alerts
In the app, open a rider you follow and tap Alerts. Choose Started, Halfway and Finished, tap Save, and allow notifications. Alerts need no account. You’ll get, for example, “Thabo started the 94.7”, “Thabo is halfway: 47.5 km” and “Thabo finished the 94.7 in 3:24:10”. Tap one to open them.
The website doesn’t send alerts. Keep their page open instead: it updates by itself.
What you see
- Where they are and the line ridden so far.
- Their status: Live, No signal, Paused, Finished, Stopped or Not started.
- Where on the course and how fast: for example “km 52.3 · 6.2 km to Cowies Hill”, with their speed in km/h or mph, from your units setting.
- Their finish estimate, such as “~14:21”, in the race’s own time zone.
If they set a goal on a one-day race:
- a faint Goal marker shows where someone riding exactly to their goal would be now;
- their card says “7 min ahead of goal” in green, or “13 min behind goal” in amber;
- the finish estimate is their start, plus their goal, plus that gap;
- at the finish: “Finished in 3:24:10 · 6 min under goal”.
With no goal, their card says No goal set, there’s no ghost, and the estimate comes from their planned speed. On a stage race it says No goal on stage races.
Cheer them on from the same screen with a tap on the back.
Stop following
Open the rider and tap Stop following: they leave your Live screen, and their alerts stop. You can follow them again any time.
Following by name is on the web and in the Android app now, and comes to the iPhone app in its next update. On an iPhone, use windline.tech/follow in your browser until then.
