Privacy
Windline shows cyclists the wind and weather along their route, timed to when they’ll be on each stretch of road. This page explains what information Windline keeps, why, and how you can have it deleted. Windline is made by Cross Constellation. Questions go to hello@windline.tech.
The short version. Windline doesn’t track you, doesn’t show you ads based on your behaviour, and never sells your information. You can open any shared ride page without an account. If you make an account, we keep your name, your email address and the events you create, and you can delete all of it yourself at any time.
What we keep
If you only open ride pages
You don’t need an account and we don’t ask who you are. Like every website, our servers briefly see your internet address when a page loads. We use it only to keep the service running and to stop abuse, and we don’t build a profile from it. We don’t use advertising trackers or outside analytics services.
How we count visits
To see whether Windline is useful and what needs fixing, Windline counts visits itself, without cookies and without storing anything on your device:
- Which page you opened, and which features you used, such as sharing a day or changing your pace.
- Your device type and browser (for example “iPhone, Safari”), your screen width and language, and your country, which we work out from your device’s time zone setting, not from your internet address.
- The website that sent you, if any, and any error the page hit, so we can fix it.
To count each person once a day, we combine your internet address and browser with a random code that we delete at the end of each day, and keep only the scrambled result. We never store your internet address, and the result can’t be traced back to you or linked from one day to the next. These counts are seen only by Windline’s owner and are never sold or shared.
Sponsors and event partners
Some events show a sponsor or an “Official weather partner”, placed by Windline. Windline counts how often a sponsor’s card is seen and tapped, by event, day and where it was tapped (the event page, the app or a shared post). Taps go through a windline.tech link that counts the tap and then opens the sponsor’s website. No cookies or advertising trackers are used, and nothing that identifies you is recorded. Sponsors and partners receive only these totals. Once you’re on a sponsor’s website, their own privacy policy applies.
The two small cookies
If you choose units (miles or kilometres, °F or °C) or an appearance (light or dark) in your Windline account, Windline keeps those choices in two small cookies on windline.tech, so the event pages and help pages you open in the same browser follow them. They hold only the choices, such as “mi.f.in” or “dark”, and nothing about who you are. They aren’t used for counting or tracking.
If you answer a question
Some pages ask, for example, “Was this forecast useful?” or how likely you are to recommend Windline. If you answer, we keep your answer and any comment you add, with the event it was about. If you’re signed in as an organiser, your answer is linked to your account. Answering is always optional.
If you make an account
- Your name and email address, and how you sign in: Sign in with Apple, Google, or email with a confirmation code. If you use Hide My Email with Apple, we only see the relay address Apple gives us.
- An account ID that links your account to the events you create or join.
- What you create: your events, their routes (GPX files), dates, start times, pace, stop times and the names you give them. You can also add an organisation name to your profile.
- Emails we’ve sent you, such as your confirmation code and a short series of welcome emails, so we don’t send the same one twice.
If you use the iPhone app
You can follow events without an account, and they’re saved on your iPhone. If you sign in, the events you follow and your alert settings are saved to your account, so they’re the same on every device and at app.windline.tech. Ride alerts, such as the forecast the evening before, are sent only if you turn them on. The app counts its use the same way the website does (see “How we count visits”), using your iPhone model and time zone, with no advertising identifier and no tracking.
If you contact support
When you send a request through the help center or email us, we keep your name, email address, your message and anything you attach. Requests sent through the help center also include your browser and device type, such as “Safari on iPhone”, to help us fix problems. We use these only to answer you and to improve our help pages.
If you rate a help article or search the help center, we keep the rating, any note you write, and searches that found nothing, without your name or email address.
What we don’t collect
- Your device’s location. Windline works from the routes you load, not from where you are.
- Your contacts, photos, health data or ride history from other apps.
- Payment details. Windline is free.
How the forecast works
To make a forecast, Windline sends points along a route, with the times riders will reach them, to Apple Weather. These are map positions and times only. Nothing about who you are goes with them. Ratings, headwind and timings are Windline’s own calculations from Apple Weather data.
Who can see your events
- Drafts are private. Only you can see them.
- Published events are public by design: anyone with the link can see the event’s name, its routes, dates, start times and forecasts. Your email address is never shown on a public page.
- You can unpublish or delete an event at any time.
Services we use
Windline runs on a few providers who handle data on our behalf, under their own security and privacy terms:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, the database and the website.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, and Apple Weather for forecasts.
- Cloudflare: domain and network services.
- Resend: sending emails such as your confirmation code and replies to support requests.
- Map and place services: OpenFreeMap draws the maps; BigDataCloud and Komoot’s Photon find town names at the start and finish of a route; AWS Terrain Tiles supply heights when a route has none. We send them map positions only. Like any website, they see your internet address when they answer.
We don’t sell or rent your information, and we don’t share it with advertisers. If a sponsor appears on an event page, the sponsor receives no information about you.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and your events for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your profile, your events and their routes, and your sign-in are removed. Backups age out within 30 days. Support requests are kept so we can follow up on them; ask and we’ll delete yours.
Deleting your account
Sign in at app.windline.tech, go to Account and choose Delete account, or in the iPhone app choose Delete my account… on the Account screen. Windline shows you what will be removed before you confirm. You can also email hello@windline.tech from the address on your account and we’ll do it for you.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, have it deleted, or receive a copy. This includes your rights under South Africa’s POPIA, the EU and UK GDPR, and California’s CCPA. Email hello@windline.tech and we’ll respond within 30 days. If you’re unhappy with our answer, you can complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Windline isn’t aimed at children under 13 and we don’t knowingly create accounts for them. Opening a ride page needs no account. If you think a child has made an account, tell us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change how we handle your information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell account holders by email first.
