How do I make a video of my ride and share it?

Updated

On Fly the route, tap Make the video. Your browser flies the route for 26 seconds over satellite imagery, with the wind, temperature and rating at the hours you’ll be there, and makes an MP4. It goes on a page at livedot.me that plays it, with one link to share in WhatsApp or anywhere.

Make it

  1. Open Fly the route on a day of an event, or on your ride.
  2. Tap Make the video.
  3. Keep the tab open while it records, about a minute on a recent phone or computer. The progress bar shows how far it has got. If you switch away, it pauses until you come back.

Your own device makes the video. Nothing about it is recorded anywhere until it’s finished and uploaded.

What’s in it

The video is 26 seconds, in the upright 9:16 shape that fits WhatsApp Status and Instagram Stories:

  • the ride’s name, date, start time, distance and climbing;
  • the flight along the route on satellite imagery, coloured by the wind when you’ll be there, with the air moving the way the forecast says;
  • two or three short lines at the right moments, for example “Headwind out to km 40” or “10° at the start, 17° by the finish”;
  • the day’s rating, Good, Fair or Tough, and the reason for it;
  • “See the full forecast” and the age of the forecast.

The numbers are the same ones the ride page shows.

A ride more than 10 days away has no forecast yet. Its video shows the typical weather for that date and those hours, from 10 years of records. It says so on every line (“Usually…”, “Typical weather · 10 years of data”) and never calls it a forecast.

Share it

When it’s finished, the video’s own page opens, at an address like livedot.me/v/…. It plays the video, with the ride’s numbers and a link to the full forecast.

  • Share sends the link with a short message. In WhatsApp and most apps the link shows a large preview with a play button, the distance and the climbing.
  • Save the video keeps the MP4, for Instagram Stories or anywhere else that wants the file.

Share with livedot is only for you, the person who made it. Send it to livedot and we may feature it on our socials, with credit to you. You can withdraw it on the same page. It isn’t offered for private rides.

Good to know

  • Videos are kept for 14 days, then the page says the video has expired. Make a new one any time; the forecast will be fresher too.
  • Private rides can’t make a video yet.
  • The video needs a recent browser: Chrome, Edge, or Safari 17 or later. In the iPhone and Android apps it works the same way.
  • The page carries Windline’s thanks to its sponsor. The video itself never does.
