How does Fly the route work in the iPhone app?
Updated
On any day, tap Fly the route. The camera flies the route on satellite imagery with the wind at the hour you’ll be there, the climbs, and every 100 m of road checked. Drag along the profile to go anywhere, and use Layers to colour the route by wind, heat, climb or surface.
Open it
On a day, tap Fly the route. It’s on every day of every event, and it’s free.
What you see
The camera flies along the route on satellite imagery. The card shows, at that point:
- How far along you are, for example “12.4 of 98 km”, and the time you’ll be there.
- The road: whether it’s tar, the road’s name and class, or “Not on a mapped road” with how far away the nearest one is.
- The wind: headwind, tailwind or side-on, at the hour you’ll be there.
- Temp, Height, Gradient, Climbed and To climb.
Controls
- Play and pause, with speeds ½×, 1× and 3×.
- The profile at the bottom: drag along it to jump anywhere.
- Whole route: the whole day from above.
- Move the map with your fingers to look around.
Layers
Tap Layers:
- Weather: Wind, moving air, Wind arrows, Gusts, Rain and Temperature.
- Colour the route by: Wind, Heat, Climb or Surface (tar, gravel or dirt, not mapped, or off any road).
- Route check: how much of the route is on mapped roads and how much is tar, and the stretches to look at. Tap one to fly there.
- When you ride: the start time and pace it’s timed for.
The route check
Windline checks every 100 m of the route against the road map, so you can spot a stretch of gravel, a farm track or a line drawn across a field before the day. See how to check a cycling route.
Distances and temperatures follow your units in Settings. With Reduce Motion on in your iPhone’s settings, the air doesn’t move and the camera doesn’t sweep.
On a computer, see Fly the route on the web.
