Can I put the route on my Garmin or other bike computer?
Updated
If the organiser has turned it on, yes. Tap Route on the event page for every day’s route in one zip, or open a day and tap Route for Garmin and other apps for that day with its wind cues. Choose Garmin for a course (.fit) your Edge or watch shows in Up Ahead, or Other apps for a GPX file. It’s off unless the organiser turns it on.
Only when the organiser turns it on
Route downloads are off for every event unless its organiser turns them on. Some organisers would rather not share their route files. If you don’t see a Route option, the organiser hasn’t turned it on. You still get the full map and forecast. Ask them if you’d like the files.
Every day at once
On the event page, tap Route (next to Fronts and Overview), then choose:
- Garmin, for a course file (.fit) for each day; or
- Other apps, for a GPX file for each day.
For a tour or race with several days, you get one zip with a file per day, numbered in order (for example “01 Day 1 - Pietermaritzburg to Durban.fit”). A regular ride gives you the one route.
One day, with its wind cues
Open a day and tap Route for Garmin and other apps, just below the kilometre (or mile) breakdown. You get that day’s route with wind cues added from the forecast on the page, at the pace it shows:
- “Headwind 15 km/h” (9 mph) where the wind turns against you, and how far it lasts;
- “Tailwind 9 km/h” (6 mph) where it’s behind you;
- “Crosswind” stretches, with gusty side-on winds marked as a hazard.
On a Garmin Edge or watch, the cues appear in Up Ahead with the distance to each. Other apps show them as points on the route.
The cues are a snapshot of the forecast when you download it. Download the day again the evening before for the latest. The “every day at once” zip has the routes without cues, because days further ahead change too much to be useful.
Getting it onto a Garmin
Windline can’t send a course straight to your device. Garmin doesn’t currently let new apps do that. Either:
- In Garmin Connect on the web: go to Training & Planning, then Courses, then Import, and choose the .fit file (unzip first if you downloaded every day). It syncs to your device like any course.
- By cable: plug your Edge into a computer and copy the .fit files into its Garmin/NewFiles folder. They appear under Courses after you unplug.
Other bike computers and apps
The GPX file works with Wahoo (ELEMNT app), Hammerhead Karoo, Komoot, Ride with GPS, Strava routes and most other apps. Import it the way that app imports routes.
In the iPhone app
The iPhone app doesn’t have route downloads yet. Open the event link in Safari instead. See opening an event link.
