How do I go live on a race?
Updated
Enter the race (your own, or your club’s with I’m riding) and fill in its Live tracking card: your link, Findable by anyone, who can see you and, on a one-day race, your goal time. On race day, tap the reminder 30 minutes before the start, or Go live on your club, then tap Start live tracking. It stops by itself at the finish.
On a race, every rider is their own dot on the map. You go live from the Windline app on your phone, signed in to your Windline account. The people following you watch on any phone or computer, with no app or account. A web browser doesn’t send your position.
Enter the race
- Your own race: on the Events screen, tap +, then Set up a new event, and choose Race or event. Live tracking is on for a new race. Add the route, and it’s yours to go live on.
- Your club’s race: tap I’m riding on it. See your club’s race map.
The Live tracking card
On your own race, tap it under Organising, then tap the gear: the card is in Race settings. (A race under My Rides has it on its page.) On a club race you’re riding, tap Your goal and live tracking under the race, on the club. The card has:
- Your follow link: windline.tech/f/ and a short code, the same for every race. Share my live tracking sends it. Share picture for WhatsApp and socials makes a picture with your name, the race and your goal.
- Findable by anyone: off unless you switch it on. See Findable by anyone.
- Who can see you: People I approve (on unless you switch it off: people whose request you accepted, and anyone you’ve sent your link to) and My club’s members. Switch off People I approve and your link stops showing you. See who can see you.
- Your goal time, on a one-day race: hours and minutes, such as 3:30.
- Your words: up to 60 characters, such as “Going for sub 3:30”, on your share picture and your live card.
Tap Save.
Your goal and its ghost
With a goal, followers see a faint Goal marker on the map: where someone riding exactly to your goal would be now. Your card says how you’re doing, “7 min ahead of goal” in green or “13 min behind goal” in amber, and at the finish, “Finished in 3:24:10 · 6 min under goal”. The ghost is timed by the same engine as your forecast, slower on the climbs. With no goal, there’s no ghost, and your card says No goal set.
On race day
- About 30 minutes before the start, Windline reminds you, for example “The 94.7 starts at 06:15”. Tap the notification and Go live opens for that race. Or, on a club race, tap Go live on the club. On your own race, you can also open its day from Today’s ride on the Events screen.
- Tap Start live tracking. The first time, Android asks to use your location: While using the app is enough. Allow notifications too, and when Windline asks to keep running in the background, tap Allow.
- Put the phone in your pocket and ride.
While you ride, a Windline notification shows you’re live, with Pause and Stop, and Live now at the top of Events has them too. Tap Live now to see your taps on the back. With no signal, your phone keeps every position and sends them when the signal is back. Don’t swipe Windline away while you ride. See live tracking from the Android app.
Stage races
A race can have more than one day. You go live on each day’s stage: the Go live screen picks today’s, and you can choose another under Stage. Stage races have no goal time and no ghost: followers see No goal on stage races.
When it stops
- At the finish: within 150 m of the end. Your followers get your time.
- By itself: 3 hours after your planned finish, but never while you’re still moving.
- When you tap Stop: followers see that you stopped, not that you finished.
Open Go live again on a day you’ve finished and it says You’ve finished this day, with your time and your taps.
The day after the race, it moves to Past at the bottom of the Events screen, with “Finished in” your time. Tap it for your taps on the back.
Battery
A long race can mean 10 hours in the saddle. Start with a full battery, and carry a power bank on a long one. Windline takes a position about every 25 metres you move and sends them every 30 seconds. Keep Windline allowed to run in the background: Samsung and some other phones put apps to sleep to save battery.
Going live on a race is in the Android app now, and comes to the iPhone app in its next update. Your followers can watch on the web or in the app.
