Can I email a GPX file to Windline?
Updated
Yes. Email the GPX file from the address on your Windline account to routes@windline.tech, and it lands in Rides as a private draft, ready to set the date. One file makes a ride. Several files in one email make one multi-day tour, a day per file, in file-name order. Separate emails make separate events. TCX, FIT, zips and Ride with GPS links work too.
Send it
- Attach the GPX file to an email, from any phone, computer or mail app.
- Send it to routes@windline.tech, from the email address on your Windline account.
- In a minute or so it’s in Rides, under My Rides, as a private draft that only you can see. You get a reply with a link to open it, and a notification on your phone if you have the Windline app.
Open it and set the date and start time. Until you do, it’s on the next Saturday, at 06:00 where the route starts.
Your address to send to is on the dashboard, under Rides, with a Copy button.
One email, one event
- One file makes a ride.
- Several files in one email, or a zip of them, make one multi-day tour, a day for each file. The days go in the order of the file names: Day 1, Day 2, Day 10, or 01, 02, 03. If the names have no numbers, they go in the order the routes were ridden, when the files say so, otherwise in the order you attached them.
- Want separate events? Send separate emails. Each email makes its own event.
A ride is named from its route. A tour is named from the email’s subject, or from the first route when there’s no subject. Each day is labelled with its route’s name.
Tour, race or ride?
While it’s a draft, you can change what kind of event it is. Open it on the dashboard, choose Settings, then Kind of event: Regular / group ride, Race or event, or Multi-day tour. Your routes come with it, and Day 3 becomes Stage 3.
A ride has one route. Making a tour into a ride keeps Day 1 and removes the other days, and Windline tells you before it does. Once you publish, the kind is set, because the link is out there. See choosing an event type.
What you can send
- GPX, TCX and FIT files, and zips of them. Up to 10 routes and 10 MB in one email.
- A link in the email: a Ride with GPS route or collection, or a link to a GPX file. Strava and Komoot don’t let other apps read their routes: export the GPX and attach it instead. See getting a GPX file.
- A forwarded email with the GPX files in it, such as the route pack from an organiser. Forward it from your own address.
- Up to 30 routes a day.
It has to come from your account’s email
Windline finds your account by the address the email comes from, and checks your email provider’s signature to be sure it was really you. If you send it from another address, the reply says so: send it from the email you use for Windline, or sign up free with that address and send it again.
If you signed in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, emailed routes can’t be matched to your account yet. Add them on the dashboard or in the app instead.
If a file didn’t go in
The reply lists what was added and, for anything that wasn’t, why: a file with no route in it, a file that isn’t a route, more than 10 routes, or an email over 10 MB. The routes that worked are still added. See GPX file errors.
Is my email kept?
No. Windline reads the routes from your email, makes the event, and lets the email go. The routes stay private to you until you share or publish the event.
