GPX file errors and how to fix them
Updated
Most GPX problems come from exporting the wrong kind of file. Windline needs a .gpx file containing a track or route with at least two points. Export the route again as GPX from your planner, then drop the new file in.
“Only GPX files can be added.”
The file you dropped doesn’t end in .gpx. TCX, FIT, KML and ZIP files can’t be added. Export the route as GPX instead: see getting a GPX file. If your planner only offers TCX or FIT, a free converter such as GPSBabel can make a GPX.
“… isn’t a valid GPX file.”
The file ends in .gpx but isn’t readable GPX inside. Common causes:
- The download didn’t finish, or the file is empty. Download it again.
- It was saved from a web page (an HTML page renamed to .gpx). Use the planner’s own export button.
- It was edited by hand and the XML is broken. Export a fresh copy.
“… has no route in it.”
The file is valid but has no track or route, only waypoints or points of interest. In your planner, export the track or route, not the waypoints.
“… has no usable points.”
The track has fewer than two points with a latitude and longitude. This usually means an empty or unfinished route. Check the route in your planner and export again.
“Those files couldn’t be read.” or “2 files skipped: …”
When you add several files, any that fail are skipped and the others still go in. The message names the first problem: fix that file using the notes above and add it again.
Still stuck?
Send us the file. Attach the GPX file to your message, with a screenshot of the error, and we’ll find out what’s wrong with it.
