How to export a GPX file from Strava
Download any Strava route or ride as a GPX file, on a computer or your phone, and fix the export when it fails.
The short answer
To export GPX from Strava, use the Strava website, because the mobile app can't export files. For a route, open it, click the down arrow icon and choose GPX. For your own activity, open it, click the More (three-dot) menu and select Export GPX. The .gpx file downloads straight to your device.
Key takeaways
- Strava exports files only from its website; on a phone, use your browser's desktop site.
- Routes download via the down arrow icon; activities via Export GPX in the More menu.
- Your own activity's GPX keeps timestamps and sensor data; other riders' files lose performance data.
- Other riders' tracks lose any start and end hidden by their privacy settings.
Definitions
- Route
- A planned path in Strava, drawn in the route builder or saved from another rider, that you can follow on a ride.
- Activity
- A ride you or another athlete recorded and uploaded to Strava.
- GPX
- A standard file format (GPS Exchange Format) that stores a route or ride as points with latitude, longitude and usually elevation.
Route or activity: which GPX do you need?
It depends on what you'll do with it. To follow or forecast a ride you haven't done yet, export a route. To keep or analyse a ride you've finished, export the activity. Either way, you export GPX from Strava on its website, not in the app. If GPX files are new to you, start with our guide to GPX files for cycling.
| Route | Your own activity | Another rider's activity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A planned path | A ride you recorded | A ride someone else recorded |
| How to export | Down arrow icon on the route page | More (three-dot) menu, then Export GPX | GPX Download button on the map |
| What's in the file | The path, as GPX or TCX | GPS points, timestamps, heart rate, cadence, temperature, power-meter data | The path, with performance data stripped |
| Who can export it | Anyone, if the route is public | You, with the full file | Anyone who can see it, minus hidden start and end |
How do you export a Strava route as a GPX file?
Open the route on strava.com, click the down arrow icon and choose GPX. Strava's help centre says you can export any public route this way.
- Sign in at strava.com in a web browser.
- Select Dashboard, then My Routes, to see routes you've created or saved. For a public route someone shared, open their link instead.
- Open the route.
- Click the down arrow icon.
- Choose GPX. The file lands in your browser's downloads folder.
The same menu offers TCX, which Strava suggests for devices without base maps. Creating routes from scratch needs a subscription, and Strava listed its newer Route Saves feature as subscriber-only in June 2026.

How do you export a Strava activity as a GPX file?
Open the activity on strava.com, click the More (three-dot) menu and select Export GPX.
- Sign in at strava.com and open one of your activities.
- Click the three-dot icon, on the left-hand side of the page on the website.
- Select Export GPX. The file downloads with a .gpx extension.
Strava generally recommends Export Original, in the same menu, which gives you the file as uploaded, often in FIT format. For TCX, add /export_tcx to the end of the activity's web address. An activity without GPS data, such as an indoor trainer ride, produces an empty or unreadable GPX.
Can you export GPX from Strava on your phone?
Not in the app. Strava's help centre says exporting your data is only available on the Strava website. You have three workarounds:
- Use the website in your phone's browser. Open strava.com, sign in, switch your browser to its desktop-site mode, then follow the web steps above.
- Do it later on a computer. Send yourself the route or activity link and export it there.
- Skip the file. If you only need the route on a bike computer or watch, Strava syncs routes you've created or starred to compatible Garmin devices, and its help centre has sync guides for Coros, Polar and Suunto too.
Can you download someone else's Strava route or ride?
Yes, within their privacy settings. Any public route exports in the usual way. On another athlete's activity, a GPX Download button sits at the top right of the map.
Strava is clear about the limits:
- Files from other athletes' activities are stripped of performance data, so there are no heart-rate or power figures.
- They respect map visibility. Strava hides the first and last 200 m (656 ft) of activities by default, and riders can hide more, within 1.6 km (1 mile) of the start or end. A downloaded track can therefore start some way from where the rider actually set off.
- Only the owner can export an activity set to "Only You".
Ask before you share someone's route beyond your group, and for an organised event, use the organiser's official file.
How do you check the file, and fix a failed export?
Open the GPX in the app or device you'll use, and check that the start, finish and distance match what Strava shows. If something's wrong, the cause is usually one of these:
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No export option | You're in the mobile app | Use strava.com in a browser |
| Empty or unreadable file | The activity has no GPS data | Check the activity has a map |
| Track starts or ends short | The rider's map visibility | Ask them for the file, or redraw the ends |
| No times or heart rate | It's another athlete's activity | Only the owner's export keeps them |
| Can't open the route or ride | It's private ("Only You") | Ask the rider to send the file |
| Device won't load it | It expects TCX | Try TCX instead |
What can you do with the GPX next?
Load it onto a bike computer, into another planner, or into a route-timed forecast. A route-timed forecast works out when you'll reach each stretch of the route and shows the weather for that place at that hour.
Our guide to seeing the weather along a Strava route walks through it, how to read a weather forecast for a bike ride explains what to look for, and our round-up of the best weather apps for cycling compares the tools. Planning in Komoot instead? See how to download a GPX file from Komoot.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a Strava subscription to export a GPX?
Not according to Strava's help pages, which don't list GPX export among the subscriber features. You can export your own activities and any public route from the website. What a subscription adds is the route tools: creating routes from scratch and the newer Route Saves feature are both listed as subscriber-only.
Does a Strava GPX include heart rate and power?
Your own activity's GPX includes GPS coordinates, timestamps and sensor data such as heart rate, cadence and temperature. It includes power from a power meter, but not Strava's estimated power. Strava says TCX files hold more, including watts. Files downloaded from other athletes' activities are stripped of performance data.
Should you download GPX or TCX from Strava?
For most apps and route planners, GPX is the safer choice. Strava's help suggests GPX for devices with base maps installed, because it shows a styled map with text directions, and TCX for devices without base maps. Some older units, such as the Garmin Edge 500, need TCX for courses. See [GPX vs FIT vs TCX](/blog/gpx-vs-fit-vs-tcx/).
How do you export all your Strava activities at once?
Use the bulk export. On strava.com, open Settings, choose My Account, select Get Started under Download your account, then Request download. Strava emails you a link to the archive, which can take a few hours, so make sure you can still reach the email address on your account.
Can you send a Strava route to a Garmin without a GPX?
Yes. Strava automatically syncs routes you've created or starred to Garmin devices that support Courses. In the Garmin Connect app, turn on the Courses permission under Settings, Connected Apps, Strava. If a saved route doesn't appear on the device, Strava suggests unstarring it and starring it again.
Will my hidden start and end show in a GPX I share?
Yes. Your own export is the full file, including the start and end that Strava's map visibility hides from other athletes. If a ride starts at your home, trim the first and last stretch before sharing the file, or share a route instead of the recorded activity.
