Where do the towns and climbing figures come from?

Updated

Windline takes the towns from the route’s name inside the GPX file when it reads like “Day 3 - Big Sur to Cambria”, and otherwise looks them up from the start and finish points. Climbing comes from the file’s heights, or from terrain data if the file has none.

Towns

Windline tries these in order:

  1. The route’s name in the file, if it reads like “Day 3 - Big Sur to Cambria”, “Big Sur – Cambria” or “Big Sur -> Cambria”.
  2. A map lookup of the nearest town to the start and finish points.

Names with numbers, very long names, venues such as hotels, lodges or farms, and country names are left out. If the start and finish are within 1.5 km (1 mile) of each other, it’s treated as a loop and both get the same town.

Got the wrong town? Open the day and type the right one under Starts in and Finishes in. Windline never overwrites a name you’ve typed.

Climbing

  • If the GPX file has heights, Windline adds up the climbing from them, ignoring rises of less than 4 m (13 ft) so GPS noise doesn’t inflate it.
  • If fewer than half the points have a height, Windline looks the heights up from terrain data (about 30 m, or 100 ft, detail) after the route is saved.

You’ll see “Filled in towns and climbing” when it’s done. The climbing also feeds the timing: you’re slower uphill and faster downhill. See how the forecast is timed.
