What notifications does the Windline Android app send?

Updated

An alert at 6 pm the evening before each ride you follow, with the rating, the reason and the weather, with or without an account. Signed in, it also tells you when an event you follow changes or is removed, when your club adds a ride (if you turned that on), and when a club approves you. Allow notifications when the app asks.

The 6 pm alert

One notification at 6 pm the evening before each ride you follow, in the event’s own time zone, for example:

Pacific Coast Tour · Day 3 Tomorrow: Fair. Headwind: about 22% more effort. Wind 14 · gusts 29 · 9–16°, feels like 5° · dry. Forecast from 14:20.

It’s the same rating and numbers you’ll see on the day’s page. Windline works it out on your phone, so it arrives even with no signal, and refreshes it shortly before when there’s signal. It works with or without an account. Tap it to open the event. See evening-before alerts.

Everything else you’ll get

Notification When
“Pont Drift: Day 3 now starts at 07:00” The organiser changes a day’s date, start time or route, or adds or removes a day, on an event you follow. Several edits close together arrive as one notification.
“‹Event› was removed by its organiser” An event you follow is taken down before it’s over.
“‹Club› added a ride” Your club puts a new ride on its page, if you turned on Tell me when the club adds a ride for that club.
“Day 3 starts at 06:00. Start live tracking?” 30 minutes before each start of an event you own with live tracking on. Tap it to start. See live tracking from the app.
“You’re in ‹club›” A club you asked to join approves you.
“‹Name› asked to join ‹club›” Only for people who run a club: someone asks to join.

While you’re live tracking, an ongoing notification shows it’s on, with Pause and Stop.

Tap any notification to open the event or the club it’s about.

The event, club and join notifications come to the phone where you’re signed in to Windline. Sign out and that phone stops getting them.

Turn them on

On Android 13 and newer, the first time you follow an event, the app explains Know the wind the night before. Tap Continue, then Allow when Android asks.

If you said no before, open the app’s Settings: under Alerts it says Off in phone settings, with Turn on in phone settings. Or open your phone’s Settings → Apps → Windline → Notifications and switch them on. An event’s page also says when they’re off, with Open Settings.

Choose what you get

  • The evening-before alert for one event: the Alerts switch on that event’s page.
  • New club rides: on the club, with Tell me when the club adds a ride.
  • Each kind of notification: in Settings → Apps → Windline → Notifications, Windline has three categories: Windline (the 6 pm alerts, your events and clubs), Live tracking and Start live tracking reminders. Switch any of them off.

No marketing, ever. Windline only notifies you about rides and clubs you chose.

Why didn’t I get one?

  • Notifications are off for Windline in your phone’s settings, or Do Not Disturb was on.
  • The ride is more than about 10 days away, so it has no forecast yet.
  • Your phone had no signal. The alert still arrives, but may say “Open Windline for the latest wind” instead of the numbers.
  • For event and club notifications: you’re not signed in on this phone.
