How do I get started with the Android app?

Updated

Install Windline from windline.tech/android and open it. Choose your units, then join the demo tour to see how a day reads, or skip it. You don’t need an account to follow an event: tap its link and it opens in the app. A free account lets you set up events, join clubs and live track.

To install it, see installing Windline on Android.

The first time you open it

The app opens on Events, then shows you round:

  1. Know the wind before you ride. Choose your units: Distance and speed (km or miles), Temperature (°C or °F) and Rain (mm or inches). You can change them any time in Settings.
  2. See how it works. Tap Join the demo tour: a five-day tour down the Pacific Coast, from San Francisco to Solvang. Its days are always just ahead, so every forecast is live. The app shows you round it: tap a day to see its wind, then Finish (Next if you’re signed in).
  3. Ride with Strava? If there’s room on Windline’s Strava connection, the app offers to add the wind to every ride you upload to Strava. Tap Not now to skip. See Strava and Ride with GPS in the app.
  4. Create your free Windline account, or tap Not now. See signing in.

Skip at the top skips the tour. To see it again, open Settings and tap See how Windline works.

If you open the app from an event link, it goes straight to that event instead.

Then add your rides

  • An event someone shared: tap its link in WhatsApp, Gmail or Messages, and it opens in the app. Or tap + on the Events screen, then Follow an event, and paste the link. See following an event.
  • Your own ride or trip, or an event you organise: tap + on the Events screen, then Set up a new event. The app asks you to sign in first. See setting up an event in the app.

Do I need an account?

Not to follow an event. The events you follow, their 6 pm alerts and the widget all work without one, kept on this phone. The first time you follow an event without an account, the app offers once to save it to a free account; tap Not now to carry on.

You need a free account to set up events, join clubs, live track and enter the Windline 1000. It’s the same account as on windline.tech and the iPhone app, so your events and settings are on any phone you sign in on.

Riders who only want to look at an event don’t need the app at all: every event link opens in any browser.

Getting round

Everything starts on the Events screen. To go back, use your phone’s back button or back gesture, or the arrow at the top left. See the Events screen.

The app needs Android 8 or newer.
