How do I plan my route’s weather by dropping a GPX into livedot?

Updated

In ChatGPT or Claude with livedot, attach your route’s GPX file, or paste a Ride with GPS link, and say when you’ll start. livedot works out the weather along it at the hour you reach each stretch: the forecast within 10 days, 10 years of weather on that date beyond. No account needed.

Ask it

  1. In ChatGPT or Claude, add livedot: search for it, or add it at https://livedot.me/mcp. See using livedot in ChatGPT and Claude.
  2. Attach your GPX file, or paste a Ride with GPS link or any public link to a GPX file. Strava links don’t work here.
  3. Say when you’ll start: “What’s the wind on this on Sunday at 7?”

If you don’t say when, livedot asks. No account and no sign-in needed.

What you get

The same reading Windline gives an event, along your own route:

  • a rating, Good, Fair or Tough, and with a forecast, the reason;
  • the temperature at the start and the finish;
  • the wind on the road: where it’s a headwind or a tailwind, and how strong;
  • rain: the amount and where it starts, or for history, how many days in 10 had rain;
  • a map of the route, coloured by the wind.

It’s timed for a rider at 25 km/h (16 mph). Give your own speed and it uses that: “at 30 km/h” (19 mph). See how the forecast is timed.

Forecast or history

  • Within 10 days of your start: the live forecast from Apple Weather.
  • Further out: 10 years of weather on that date, from Copernicus ERA5 records, labelled as history, not a forecast. See historic weather.

Several days

Attach every day’s GPX file together, and livedot reads them as one tour: in the order of the numbers in the file names, else by the map, one day after another from your start. Name any rest days and it skips them. You get each day’s weather, the same days creating a tour would make.

Then make it an event

Happy with it? Every answer links to Windline. Or, signed in with your Windline account, ask livedot to make it a ride or a tour from the same files. See creating a tour from GPX files.
